Prescriptions Update
From February 1, 2026, New Zealanders with stable, long-term conditions can receive prescriptions valid for up to 12 months, reducing GP visits and costs. While valid for a year, patients will still collect medication in 3-month installments at the pharmacy. This applies to chronic medications (e.g., blood pressure, asthma, oral contraceptives).
Key Details for 12-Month Prescriptions:
- Eligibility: Generally for patients with stable, long-term conditions who do not require frequent monitoring (e.g., regular blood tests).
- Approval: The final decision on suitability rests with the prescriber (GP).
- Exceptions: Not suitable for, or excludes, some medications like controlled drugs (e.g., opioids, stimulants), medications needed only "as required," or if the condition is unstable.
- Costs: Patients pay for the 12-month script once, reducing the need for quarterly co-payments.
- Process: A 12-month prescription does not mean receiving all medication at once; you still collect 3-month supplies.
Please note the annual prescription decision can only be made by the prescribing GP at a patient visit and not by talking to the nurses over the phone.
